As a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Brown University, Dr. Tomlinson has been a consultant to the World Health Organization, National Institutes of Health, and Gates Foundation and developed newborn male circumcision training programs in Nigeria, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Kenya. He has been a staff physician at South County Hospital for the past 20 years and was named Physician of the Year and awarded the degree of Fellow from the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2015.

Access to quality healthcare remains one of the greatest challenges facing rural communities across West Africa. While urban centers often benefit from hospitals and specialized medical services, many rural villages continue to rely on small community clinics that operate with limited resources. Yet these facilities frequently serve as the first—and often only—point of care for thousands of people.

On June 20, 2026, the Give Right Foundation conducted a field assessment in the village of Kpétassi, located in the Kpélé Prefecture of Togo's Plateaux Region. The purpose of the visit was to evaluate the operating conditions of La Grâce Divine First Aid Post, assess the healthcare needs of the surrounding communities, and identify opportunities to strengthen primary healthcare services in this underserved rural area.

A Strategic Rural Community

Kpétassi is situated approximately seven kilometers from the canton of Akata and the nearest paved road. Although accessible by an improved dirt road, the village remains relatively isolated from larger healthcare facilities.

Despite its rural setting, Kpétassi serves as an important healthcare hub for nearly seven neighboring villages, including Akata. The most distant community lies approximately fifteen kilometers away, making local access to healthcare essential for many families.

The health center's catchment area is estimated to include between 1,500 and 2,000 residents, many of whom depend almost entirely on the clinic for routine medical consultations, nursing care, wound treatment, first aid, prenatal services, and management of common illnesses. Without this facility, patients would often be forced to travel significant distances to the Akata Prefectural Health Unit, delaying treatment and increasing healthcare costs.

A Community Initiative Making a Difference

La Grâce Divine First Aid Post was established on November 11, 2025, through the dedication and personal commitment of Mrs. NYAKPO Adzowa Anne, a professionally trained registered nurse determined to bring healthcare closer to underserved populations.

Operating as a privately managed, community-based health initiative, the clinic has quickly earned the confidence and trust of local residents.

Although modest in size, the facility has become an indispensable resource for families throughout the surrounding villages.

Limited Resources, Extraordinary Commitment

The clinic currently occupies a small cement-block building consisting of three adjoining rooms, each measuring approximately ten square meters.

The facility is rented at a modest cost of 2,500 CFA francs per room, with each space serving a specific purpose:

• One room functions as the nurse's living quarters.
• One room serves as the consultation office.
• One room is dedicated to patient treatment.

The consultation room contains only a desk and three chairs, while the treatment room is equipped with two non-adjustable examination beds and two intravenous (IV) stands.

Despite these limited resources, the clinic provides essential healthcare services every day, demonstrating how determination and community commitment can overcome significant challenges.

From Agricultural Office to Rural Health Center

The story of the building itself reflects the resilience of the project.

The structure originally served as the veterinary office of a 72-hectare agricultural complex that has been inactive for several years. Located behind the former farm residence, the building stood unused until Mrs. Nyakpo leased it from the farm caretaker.

Recognizing the urgent healthcare needs of the community, she personally financed the renovations required to transform the abandoned structure into a functioning health facility.

Today, what was once an empty office has become a lifeline for hundreds of families.

Strong Community Support

One of the most encouraging findings of the assessment was the overwhelming support demonstrated by the local community.

Residents consistently choose La Grâce Divine First Aid Post as their first point of care, seeking treatment there before traveling to larger health facilities in Akata or Kpalimé when specialized medical services are required.

The clinic has also developed an excellent relationship with the village's traditional leadership.

Recognizing its importance to community health, the village chief and council of elders have generously donated approximately 1,800 square meters of land for the future expansion of the health center.

This remarkable contribution reflects the community's confidence in the project and its commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare remains accessible for future generations.

Looking Ahead

The field assessment clearly demonstrated that La Grâce Divine First Aid Post plays a vital role in improving access to primary healthcare for Kpétassi and the surrounding villages.

However, the clinic's ability to meet growing healthcare demands is constrained by limited infrastructure, medical equipment, and clinical space. Strategic investment will be essential to expand services, improve patient care, and strengthen emergency response capacity.

The Give Right Foundation envisions transforming this modest first aid post into a comprehensive rural health center equipped to provide high-quality primary healthcare, maternal and child health services, diagnostic capabilities, and community health education.

Such an investment would not only improve health outcomes but also reduce unnecessary referrals, lower healthcare costs for families, and strengthen the overall health system in this underserved region.

French is the primary language of education, business, and commerce inTogo. However, as tourism and international business continue to grow, Togo is increasingly recognizing the benefits of learning and using English. As a result, many university students major in English.

As a volunteer in Togo, you will collaborate with local English teachers to build students' confidence in English. You will help plan and teach lessons, which are closely aligned with textbooks and a set curriculum.

Schools typically break for a long summer vacation from June to October. During this time, summer school programs are offered for children seeking additional classes.

Accommodations:
Volunteers are hosted by local families, providing a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the host country's culture while practicing French.

Qualifications:
Volunteers must be at least 21 years old and submit two letters of reference.

9-Day Mission Trip to Ghana

This 9-day mission trip combines the cultural and natural highlights of southern Ghana with meaningful seminars and community engagement. Beginning and ending in Accra, the journey includes a visit to Cape Coast Castle and community engagement activities in Ho, located in the lush Volta Region.

Trip Highlights

• Support Friends of Adaklu through community projects, seminars on biblical topics, and other service activities.
• Explore Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Interact with “sacred” mona monkeys at the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary.
• Hike to Wli Falls, the tallest waterfall in Ghana, and cool off in its refreshing pool.

Proposed Daily Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Accra
Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by members of Friends of Adaklu. You will be transferred to your hotel, enjoy a light snack, and settle in for a much-needed night’s rest before your adventure begins.

Day 2 – Orientation and Accra City Tour
After breakfast, participate in an orientation session covering trip details and Ghanaian culture, followed by a church service. In the afternoon, visit the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre for Pan African Culture, then explore Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the final resting place of Ghana’s first president. A guided tour will offer insight into Ghana’s struggle for independence and African unity.

Day 3 – Accra to Cape Coast and Elmina
After breakfast, check out and drive west to Cape Coast. Visit Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site originally built in 1653 and later used in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. A guided tour led by the curator will provide deep historical context. After lunch, tour the University of Cape Coast, one of the few seaside universities in the world, and engage with students and faculty.

Day 4 – Cape Coast to Ho (Volta Region)
Relax on a palm-lined beach near Elmina in the morning. After lunch, depart for the Volta Region, a scenic five-hour drive through Ghana’s lush countryside. Upon arrival in Ho, meet with staff from Friends of Adaklu to learn about their organization and your upcoming community engagement experience.

Day 5 – Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary and Wli Falls
Travel to the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, a community-managed conservation project. Take a guided walk through the forest, interact with mona monkeys, and capture memorable photos. Continue north to Wli Falls, the tallest waterfall in West Africa. Hike to the lower or upper falls and enjoy a refreshing swim before returning to Ho for evening community interactions.

Day 6 – Community Engagement and Departure to Accra
Join your hosts from Friends of Adaklu for volunteer activities and learn about their programs supporting education, youth, and health initiatives. Say goodbye to your new friends in Ho and return to Accra.

Day 7 – Seminar

Participate in a full-day seminar followed by an evening evaluation and reflection session.

Day 9 – Leisure and Departure
Spend your final day at leisure, completing last-minute shopping and packing. Check out of your hotel and transfer to the airport for your return flight.

Every pregnancy deserves a healthy beginning. Yet in the Adaklu District of Ghana, thousands of expectant mothers have little or no access to ultrasound services that can detect life-threatening pregnancy complications before they become emergencies.

The Give Right Foundation invites healthcare professionals, students, educators, and community volunteers to join a life-changing medical service experience that will improve maternal and child healthcare while fostering meaningful cultural exchange.

The Challenge

The Adaklu District is served by 18 healthcare facilities, yet only one currently offers ultrasound services. Limited access to prenatal imaging makes it difficult to identify high-risk pregnancies, increasing the likelihood of preventable maternal and newborn complications.

Portable ultrasound technology is changing that reality by bringing essential diagnostic services directly to rural communities.

Our Impact

In 2024, the Give Right Foundation, in partnership with Friends of Adaklu, successfully:

• Trained 7 midwives and 5 nurses in point-of-care obstetric ultrasound.
• Donated a Butterfly handheld ultrasound device to the EP Mimi Health Center.
• Expanded access to prenatal diagnostic services for women in rural communities.

Our 2027 Goal

Building on this success, we aim to:

• Expand ultrasound training to healthcare providers in the Adaklu and Kpetoe Districts.
• Donate additional Butterfly handheld ultrasound devices to rural health facilities.
• Strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare through education, mentorship, and improved diagnostic capacity.
• Support community health initiatives that improve overall well-being.

How You Can Make a Difference

Volunteers will work alongside local healthcare professionals and community leaders in a spirit of partnership and learning. Depending on your background and experience, you may:

• Assist with portable ultrasound training workshops for nurses and midwives.
• Support healthcare providers during clinical education sessions.
• Collect health data for community-based research projects.
• Assist with community health outreach and education.
• Participate in public health improvement projects, including sanitation initiatives such as the construction of latrines and handwashing stations.
• Help organize medical equipment and supplies.
• Mentor students and healthcare workers where appropriate.

Please note: Volunteers do not deliver babies or independently provide medical care. Clinical activities are conducted under the supervision of local healthcare professionals. Participants observe and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and midwives in local clinics and hospitals while contributing within the scope of their qualifications.
